I have been working with a couple, Ian and Laurel, for some months now helping them to find suitable aged care accommodation. Unlike the couple I wrote about last week where the wife needed care and her husband had an unexpected fall, leading to a situation where they needed to find a suitable aged care facility quickly, this couple are considering their future before there’s an emergency. Ian has been concerned about what would happen to Laurel if he was to take ill or no longer be around to look after her.
They were living in a lovely unit in a retirement village where they have been for the past 10 years. They decided that if they moved to aged care accommodation they needed a bedroom together and a small sitting room. They are both very social people so they wanted to live in a place where they would have appropriate interaction with others. Although they had some funds available they were limited and the new, additional services fee charged daily by many providers made the task in finding an affordable place that much more challenging.
I took them to look at three places that met their criteria, knowing that I would
have to do some negotiating on the fees on their behalf to make it happen. They made
return visits to two of the aged care facilities for another look and they eventually chose
Grand Cedar in Ashwood, which is brand new and have only just started admitting residents.
The accommodation is on the first floor with a lovely bedroom and separate sitting room. Another visit, with lunch provided, was arranged and later their son and daughter also visited the facility to give it their tick of approval.
Ian and Laurel have been there just over a week and are over the moon with their move and find they are fitting in wonderfully. As a Placement Specialist it is so rewarding to find the right accommodation for my clients.
